Suranne Jones is poised to resurrect her most acclaimed television role following an eight-year hiatus.

The ex-Coronation Street actress will return to portray the leading character of Gemma Foster in BBC One's gripping drama Doctor Foster, according to reports.

The award-winning programme featured Suranne as a vengeful GP seeking retribution against her unfaithful husband, portrayed by Bertie Carvel.

Sources suggest that Suranne and the production team believe there remains "unfinished business" surrounding the character.

Production is allegedly scheduled to commence next year, with the series potentially broadcasting in late 2026 or early 2027, reports the Mirror.

A television source revealed: "There was always a sense of unfinished business with Doctor Foster as the storyline could easily roll on and on.

"It went out on a massive high, too, with around eight million tuning in every week to watch the drama unfold between the three lead characters," they added to The Sun.

Over 10 million viewers witnessed the climactic finale of Doctor Foster's inaugural series in October 2015. The programme garnered numerous accolades, including the best actress Bafta for Suranne Jones.

The subsequent series achieved comparable success, with the finale attracting an average of 7.2 million viewers based on overnight ratings.

However, the conclusion proved divisive amongst audiences as Gemma Foster and her former husband battled over custody of their son Tom.

Discussing the programme in 2017, Suranne acknowledged it could prove "uncomfortable" viewing occasionally but maintained the show possessed a " weird, sexy edge to it. We all know what it feels like to be in a room with an ex-partner," she continued.

"Everybody has had a relationship, everyone has had exes, everybody has been in difficult circumstances. I'm sure myself and Bertie have had those thoughts and feelings; otherwise we wouldn't be able to draw on them.

"But at the same time, with the style of writing and the style of the programme, you're able to go further.

"It has a fantastical edge as well as being deep-rooted in naturalism. It also has an exaggerated way of showing how far you could go if you really wanted to."
