The Governors Awards, a prestigious honor bestowed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, recognize extraordinary lifetime achievement in cinema and exceptional contributions to the film industry.

The Governors Awards are often an emotional affair. With no television cameras or band there to play you off during a speech, it's a night where friends and colleagues get to pay tribute to that year's honorary Oscar recipients, many of whom are later in life.

The honorary Oscars are led by movie star Tom Cruise this year in addition to storied dancer Debbie Allen and prolific production designer Wynn Thomas also earning awards.

Cruise delivered an emotional speech at the event, honoring the people who make filmmaking possible and celebrating the unifying power of cinema, as per Variety.

'The cinema, it takes me around the world. It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways,' he said.

'And no matter where we come from, in that theater, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form. And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.'

Meanwhile, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award was presented to country legend Dolly Parton as she was forced to pull out of attending the event in-person amid well-publicized health issues.

Jennifer Lopez, 56, made a dramatic entrance on the red carpet in a busty grey and black ball gown.

The old-Hollywood glamour look was completed with long, elegant black velvet opera gloves, which extended past her elbows.

Ariana Grande, 32, wowed in a delicate one-shoulder pale pink vintage Dior gown designed by John Galliano. The Wicked star wore her tresses in a chic updo.

Her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, 38, rocked a unique Givenchy coat dress with a dramatic fringe trim.
