The age-old debate about the best place to store eggs has seen some people swear by keeping them in the fridge, while others insist that a cupboard, drawer or even the kitchen counter helps maintain their freshness for longer.

However, food enthusiasts have revealed an essential tip involving a common kitchen ingredient that could change how you store your eggs.

It's worth noting that when we purchase eggs from supermarkets, they're not typically stored in the fridge, and there's a crucial reason behind this.

Eggs are kept on supermarket shelves rather than in chilled sections because buying them cold and then transitioning them to a trolley can cause a temperature shift. This, followed by placing them back into your home fridge, can lead to condensation and attract bacteria.

Food experts at Modern Milkman suggest that the ideal storage location for eggs, once purchased, is actually the fridge. There, eggs can remain fresh for up to 3-4 weeks before they start to spoil.

The experts explained: "The storing of eggs in your fridge in their original packaging is the best way of keeping them extra fresh. This will keep them at a consistent temperature, staving off spoilage and slowing bacterial growth. A temperature of 4C or lower will ensure your eggs stay fresh and delicious.

And keeping eggs in their original packaging will protect their pores from being infiltrated by their new, perhaps stronger-smelling neighbours in the fridge."

Maintaining the packaging of your eggs can also be helpful, reports the Daily Record, and serves as a reminder of their use-by date, with experts suggesting that the optimal storage spot is on an interior fridge shelf rather than in the door.

"While many people prefer to have them in an easily and quickly accessible spot on the door, the temperature of this area fluctuates as you delve in and out of your fridge throughout the day," the experts said.

However, if you've separated your egg yolk and its whites, they can still be kept fresh by storing them in the fridge. Simply whisk the yolk and place it in an airtight container, where it can remain fresh for up to three days.

Egg whites should also be stored in your fridge, either in a sealable bag or an airtight container. They can be frozen for up to three months, provided they haven't been previously frozen. But if you store them in the fridge, they can last for up to two days.

The UK Government states: "Eggs are safe to eat for a couple of days after the best before date". The UK Food Standards Agency, on the other hand, advises against this, claiming "there is a greater chance of harmful bacteria growing in the eggs" after this date.
