An Antiques Roadshow guest insisted on keeping his father's rare Omega watch, even after learning it was worth a hefty five-figure sum.
On Sunday's episode (November 30), the BBC show treated viewers to 'unseen treasures' that guests brought in for valuation this summer.
These included a watch that clock speicalist Alastair Chandler described as "a real classic". The Speedmaster timepiece was brought in by a man who saw his father only taking it out for special occasions throughout his childhood.
Upon first glance, Alastair said: "This is a fabulous Omega Speedmaster made in Switzerland. It’s a real classic watch. However, what really caught my attention was it’s such an unusual dial configuration for an Omega Speedmaster."
The BBC guest went on to reveal that his dad paid just £59 for it back in 1971. The expert then explained, this specific watch style was the first to travel to the moon.
Alastair shared: "As soon as we mention the Speedmaster, we automatically think 'moon landing'. These watches were known as the moonwatch because they were the first watch to go to the moon, chosen by NASA.
"But you’ll notice on this watch there’s nothing about the moon landing on it. And that’s because it was primarily [used] as a chronograph for racing."
Despite costing just under £60, Alastair went on to reveal that, as of December 2024, the watch has a value of over £50,000.
"Given the rarity of these watches, they don't come up for sale very often. So it's quite a difficult one to place. However, I can say, in December 2024, a similar watch, same model, sold for just over £50,000 at auction," the specialist said.
Although the guest was stunned by his family watch's huge value, he has no plans to sell it.
"Wow, surprising. Very surprising," he said after hearing the sum, before adding: "But I won't be selling it."
Alastair then quipped: "It's not a bad investment on £50." To which the guest replied: "No, it's very, very good actually. Very good. Dad chose wisely."
The watch's value was largely due to the fact that there are between five and twenty of its kind, known have been released to the public, with the exact same dial configuration and style.
As with most vintage watches, it may go up in value over time, which is likely why the guest was keen to keep the timepiece. Viewers even noted this on social media, with one X user pointing out that the guest may want to "take his time selling that!".
Antiques Roadshow airs on BBC One.
