Archaeologists could have found the original grave of  St. Nicholas in Turkey, before an infamous historic grave robbery.

Although he is immortalised in the stories of Christmas, Kris Kringle lived as a real man in the fourth century.

Father Christmas is based on the figure of St. Nicholas, who was born in Turkey and worked as a bishop in a town now known as Demre, as per Jerusalem Post.

The saint was buried at the grounds of his church, the St. Nicholas Church in what was called Myra.

But then a new church was built on top of his under the order of Roman Emperor Theodosis II. But despite his grave certifiably being in Turkey - this is not where his remains lie.

Unlike so many other saints, St Nick’s bones have all been preserved in one single spot a secondary “grave” in Bari, Italy - after a centuries-old heist.

In 2022, archaeologists in Turkey found the spot where he was put to rest before his bones were moved.  Excavations saw scientists uncover the original ground floor of St. Nicholas’ Church, where he worked as a bishop.

It is possible, according to Antalya Cultural Heritage Preservation Regional Board president Prof. Dr. Osman Eravşar, that there may even be some remains or relics there. However, rising sea levels have left parts of the original church now flooded, frustrating efforts to find any trace of the original Santa Claus in the Turkish ruins.

When the Byzantine Empire of the 11th century controlled Anatolia - they lost land to the invading forces of the Seljuk Turks. Meanwhile, the rift between the Catholics and the Greek Orthodox churches deepened. This meant the Byzantines, who were Greek Orthodox, no longer had control over the tomb of St. Nicholas.

Thus, Christians feared that they wouldn't be able to access the tomb. So in 1087, a group of Catholic Italian sailors from Bari stole the remains of St. Nicholas and brought them back to Bari. This is recorded in multiple historic texts and chronicles.  However,  the Turks and Greek Orthodox Christians saw this as theft.

St Nicholas’ remains were kept in a church inaugurated by Pope Urban II, known as the Basilica di San Nicola, where they remain to this day.

Many stories of St Nicholas have existed since the demise of the Roman Empire, including how he chopped down a demon-possessed tree, stopped a storm, and saved girls from prostitution. It was said he also brought three people back to life and got into brawls at the First Council of Nicaea.

Now, one of the most canonised saints in history, numerous miracles were attributed to the man. St. Nicholas is the patron saint for sailors, brewers, archers, children, unmarried people, merchants, repentant thieves and pawnbrokers.

But it was his famous generosity which solidified him as the gift giving bearded man we re-visit every December.Although other figures, such as Odin, also informed the character that decided which children were naughty or nice.

Some of St. Nicholas’ remains were moved from Bari in 2017 when they were loaned to Moscow. More of his remains are in Venice -as recorded in a single chronicle from the time, which said Venetian ships with crusaders took all the minor bone fragments the Bari sailors couldn't take, and brought them to Venice.
