Pluribus is the latest cult favourite sci-fi series from Apple TV, created by Breaking Bad showrunner Vince Gilligan.
Five episodes of the hit drama have aired so far, following disgruntled fantasy author Carol Sturka (played by Rhea Seehorn) as one of the last remaining humans when Earth is invaded by an extra-terrestrial hive mind virus.
Throughout the series, Carol has butted heads with fellow immune Laxmi (Menik Gooneratne), a woman from India who refuses to believe her family, including her young son Ravi (Rayaan Kamal Khan), have lost their humanity.
Due to Carol’s frequent outbursts, they have discovered that intense emotions can cause life-threatening seizures amongst the assimilated, so Laxmi and the other remaining un-Joined have distanced themselves from her attempts to find a cure.
With four more episodes to come of Pluribus’ first season, and at least one more outing confirmed by Apple TV, Laxmi is expected to make more appearances as Carol continues to resist the hive mind.
But what do we know about actress Menik Gooneratne away from the series? Let’s take a look...
Personal Life
Gooneratne is a Sri Lankan-Australian actress and writer, though she was born in the United Kingdom.
Little is known about the Pluribus star’s personal life currently and she is reportedly unmarried. However, it’s unknown if she is in a relationship or single.
Back in 2021 she made a surprise appearance at the Emmy Awards as the date of Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page.
This was not due to a romance between the pair, though, as they have simply remained friends after working together on the 2018 action film Mortal Engines.
In March 2024, Gooneratne took to her Instagram page with a rare family update, confirming that her brother had gotten married.
Her cheeky caption read: “My brother got married on the weekend…but let’s make it about me!” She included a series of snaps of herself wearing a stunning pink dress and heart-shaped sunglasses.
Other Roles
Away from Pluribus, she was previously best known for portraying school principal Priya Kapoor in 111 episodes of Neighbours between 2011 and 2013.
This wasn’t the first time she appeared in the hit Australian soap, though, as she originally made a guest appearance as a different character back in 2000. After being cast in the role of Priya, the Kapoors’ debut in the series marked the first time a family with Sri Lankan heritage had been featured.
Priya’s storylines included her troubled marriage with Ajay Kapoor (Sachin Joab), which was put under strain when she began an affair with Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis).
Her other major roles include minor parts in the Nicolas Cage film Knowing, the acclaimed Dev Patel-led drama Lion, popular CBS procedural NCIS and sci-fi series Star Trek: Picard.
Pluribus continues Fridays on Apple TV.
