There's no pleasant way to pass away, but choking on an enormous doughnut is certainly not how most people would wish to go. In the competitive eating world, choking presents a genuine danger to contestants, so severe that it resulted in the deaths of two separate speed eaters within the same week.

Travis Malouf lost his life in Denver whilst trying to devour a 250g glazed doughnut in less than 80 seconds at an American bakery chain called Voodoo.

Travis was taking part in a challenge to consume the oversized doughnut as quickly as possible, but the pastry became trapped in his throat, ultimately causing his death from asphyxiation.

Julia Edelstein witnessed the incident and informed reporters at the time that the doughnut Malouff received was "the size of a small cake," and part of a longstanding in-store competition in which successful participants won the pastry free of charge and a badge proclaiming their triumph.

Voodoo Doughnuts subsequently halted the competition. According to Edelstein, Malouff ripped the massive doughnut in two and started eating with fierce determination.

Only when it was too late did anyone recognise something had gone terribly wrong.

"Watching somebody participate in an eating contest, it looks like they're distressed," Edelstein said. "The whole thing looks like a sign of distress. Nobody realised what was happening until it was too late."

He collapsed shortly after. Two customers attempted to catch him as he fell and immediately began life-saving efforts, while others dialled 999. Despite the swift arrival of paramedics, Malouff was declared dead at the scene.

His tragic death coincided with that of 20-year-old Caitlin Nelson, a university student who tragically lost her life after choking during a pancake-eating contest at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut.

"We weren't running in front of cars or playing with guns," Edelstein said. "We were just out having fun. No one expected anything like this."

Sadly, these two are not the only speed eaters to have met their end whilst attempting to break a record. In 2016, a Japanese man choked to death while trying to consume five sushi balls in three minutes.

The 28-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, fell unconscious at the event in Hikone and tragically died three days later.
