When Renee Zellweger and Ant Anstead first met on the set of Celebrity IOU Joyride back in 2021, the unlikely couple fast became our celebrity obsession.
And after four and half years of dating, it seems Bridget Jones legend Renee, 56, is still completely Mad About the Boy with the eye-popping muscles, wide smile and boyish love of cars and renovating old houses. Who wouldn’t be?
But as their romance continues to go from strength to strength, with Ant, 46, praising his A-list love as ‘iconic’ just last week, after a statue of the actress was unveiled in London, we’re now told that the couple are sadly facing one huge hurdle in their love story – Renee’s ‘humiliating’ first marriage to country singer Kenny Chesney.
An insider says, ‘Even after all these years Renee still has baggage from her disaster marriage to Kenny. Being forced to get it annulled four months after they got married, and having that attached to her name ever since, it’s humiliating and it still bothers her. At the moment it feels as if her past is dictating her future.’
It’s been two decades now since Renee’s disastrous marriage to Kenny in 2005. The pair experienced a whirlwind romance which saw them tie the knot in a romantic beach ceremony after five months of dating.
However, just four months later, the marriage was annulled, with Renee citing ‘Fraud’ for the reason behind her divorce filing, although she later clarified it had just been ‘legal’ terminology.

Now, after making it very clear that she sees her future with Ant, with the couple purchasing a love nest together in 2023, Renee’s past has once again come back to haunt her after Kenny, 57, addressed their romance in his new memoir, Heart Life Music, which was released earlier this month.
'I had a couple relationships, but they always fell apart. Any girlfriend, no matter how much I cared, was going to finish third or fourth, maybe even fifth,’ he wrote.
‘First, there was how music consumed me. Second, there was song writing, followed by the fans, my career, and what that required’.
He had also previously told Oprah Winfrey in 2010 how he had ‘panicked’ over the thought of being married and had feared he had lost his identity.
And now the source says his latest confession, in which Kenny makes clear that Renee was never a priority in his life, is just the latest humiliation for the much-loved star.
They tell us, ‘She does not appreciate that he’s brought their marriage up again. He basically confirmed she got dumped, which should have stayed private. She had a very big reaction to his memoir, which just proved the impact that break-up made on her life.’
Meanwhile Renee has also happily entangled her life with Ant’s three children – Amelie, 22, and Archie, 19, who he shares with his first wife, Louise Storey, and six-year old Hudson, who he shares with ex Christina Haack – with the children regularly staying at their home.
And now the source says she and Ant feel ready to take the next step and become husband and wife.
But we’re told Renee is still ‘frozen’ with fear over how toxic her first marriage ended up being, despite Ant’s constant reassurance that she’s the ‘woman of his dreams’.

‘She swears she wants to marry Ant and put all the negativity with Kenny behind her but she freezes whenever the topic of a wedding comes up,’ the source says.
‘They’ve talked about it pretty openly for the better part of two years, which is a little hard for Ant, it’s got to feel like quite the roller coaster for him. The truth is Renee is the only one slowing things down. If it were up to Ant they’d have already done this, he says he has no doubt that she’s the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with.’
However, after two marriages, the insider says Wheeler Dealers alum Ant truly believes it will be a case of third time lucky for him if Renee would agree to be his wife; and has even admitted he’s had a crush on her since 1997’s Jerry Maguire.
We’re told, ‘He swears he’ll wait until the end of time for her, if that’s how long it takes because there’s no other woman he wants over Renee. He says he still pinches himself that he’s managed to land the girl from Jerry Maguire, she’s a fantasy come true for Ant. The funny thing is she couldn’t be more down to earth. Ant says that’s what he loves the most about her – that she never puts on airs or acts like a big star.’
And despite being unable to put her cold feet aside, the source says Renee is just as crazy about Ant, who she calls ‘my fellow’, even describing their first meeting as ‘serendipity’ earlier this year.
‘She says she still gets butterflies when he walks in the room, even after nearly five years together,’ the source says now.
But we’re told that Renee fears that history could repeat itself and that, by making their relationship ‘official’ with paperwork, it could ‘ruin’ the special magic they already share.
The source says, ‘Things are actually so good that it does make Renee worry that getting married will somehow ruin what they have. She admits it’s just superstition and fear getting the best of her but she can’t help it, the scars from her past really have a hold on her.’
