Britons are being warned to brace for heavy rain this weekend as the Met Office forecasts a band of wet weather sweeping across large parts of the UK on Sunday. Forecasts from the Met Office say outbreaks of rain will initially affect northern areas before spreading south, bringing the risk of downpours and gusty conditions in around 18 areas.

A more organised weather system is expected to move across the country over the weekend, ending the recent spell of settled conditions for many. The Met Office has warned that some areas could see heavier rain at times, although the system is expected to weaken as it travels across the UK. Sunday's forecast shows a broad band of rain stretching from south-west England through Wales and north-west England into southern Scotland. The unsettled conditions are then expected to continue into next week, with further showers and longer spells of rain affecting many areas. Despite the wetter outlook, forecasters say there will still be some brighter and drier intervals between weather systems. Temperatures are expected to remain near or slightly below average as the changeable pattern continues.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: "Into the weekend, a more organised area of rain and stronger winds will move across the UK, although this system is likely to weaken as it does so.

"While some heavier rain and gusty conditions are possible at times, the overall picture remains one of changeable weather, with further spells of rain or showers interspersed with some drier and brighter periods."

Looking ahead, the Met Office said unsettled conditions are likely to persist into early next week. The forecast for Sunday to Tuesday predicts further outbreaks of rain across northern parts of the UK on Sunday before the wet weather moves south on Monday.

Sunny spells and showers are expected to follow behind the rain band, with breezy conditions continuing in many areas. Forecasters said there remains some uncertainty over the finer details of the outlook, but the overall signal is for changeable weather to continue.

Temperatures are expected to stay close to seasonal averages, or slightly below, as Britain heads into the new week.
