He initially defended his remarks, adding: “Widders herself never gilded the lily and would expect nothing less.”

However, amidst backlash at his “insensitive” comments, the Times Radio regular quickly shared an apology on social media.

“I was seriously wrong and insensitive in one of the several media appearances I made yesterday in reaction to the death of Ann Widdecombe.”

He went on to say that: “I got the timing and tone of my initial word portrait of her wrong.”

He continued: “I also know that many people loved her for her subsequent showbiz stardom. Her untimely death is a horrible thing.

“My mistaken view was that in the context of rolling news coverage, I was being asked to contribute as an obituarist who has known her and interacted with her since the 1980s. This approach was premature.

“At no point was I expressing my personal feelings about her, that's not what I do. I was discussing her life in the round, based on the record of known facts and what she has said about herself, along with some recollections of our personal interactions. My choice of words on the spur of the moment was clumsy. I did not intend to offend though obviously I did.”

Mr Boulton’s initial comments about the late politician’s personal life were met with intense backlash.

Former Olympic swimmer and women’s rights activist Sharron Davies condemned the reporter’s comments exclaiming that: “These men are truly vile. Lots of things I disagreed with Ann Widdecombe on, but these are very unpleasant & unnecessary comments.

“Committed to her beliefs & extremely hard working would have also sufficed. When people show you who they are, believe them.”

Political commentator Nicholas Lissack also displayed anger at Boulton’s comments, writing on X: ‘Disgraceful scenes on Sky News as a smirking Adam Boulton rants about Ann Widdecombe as a “spinster,” an “old maid” and a “virgin” while speculating about her private life.”

Ms Widdecombe was found dead in her home with “serious injuries”, and a manhunt is currently underway to find her killer.

A 26-year-old British man was arrested, but was released and is “no longer part of the investigation.”

It is believed that Ms Widdecombe was attacked 24 hours before she was found dead, and was unable to be contacted after she failed to show up for a video interview with Channel 5 on Wednesday afternoon.

A local also reported seeing a strange man dressed in hiking gear near Ms Widdecombe's property in the early hours of the monring on the day she is believed to have died.
