If you're a devoted true crime fan searching for something to watch, Channel 5 has just the thing. The chilling tale of a woman who secretly laced her husband's spaghetti with poison is due to air on television tonight (July 7). The Poisoning: How to Kill Your Husband, which originally broadcast last year, will screen on Channel 5 at 10pm, exploring the disturbing case of Heather Mook, who covertly poisoned her unsuspecting spouse.
In 2008, the 58-year-old was convicted on two counts of poisoning. Victim John Mook survived the ordeal and was able to shed light on why his wife committed the shocking act, yet remarkably insisted that prison may not have been the right place for her, reports Wales Online.
The then 60-year-old maintained that his partner was in need of professional help and treatment. Standing on the courthouse steps, he stated: "I think she needs some serious help and I hope she gets it."
In a calculated attempt to defraud his mother out of £43,000, Heather Mook slipped rat poison into the pasta dish, along with an anti-depressant medication, before serving it to him.
Her intention was to leave her husband sufficiently confused to allow her to proceed with the crime against his mother. The jury took just two and a half hours to find her guilty, and it later emerged following the conclusion of the trial that this was not Mook's first poisoning offence.
She had in fact previously been convicted in 1982 for poisoning her seven year old daughter, Teresa. In a comparable manner, though less extreme than her attack on John, she had ground up an anti-depressant tablet and mixed it into her child's food.
Adrian Waterman QC, prosecuting, argued that she had a large supply of pills as they had been personally prescribed to her.
He said: "The stealing of the money and the giving of the drugs were linked. She gave him amitriptyline to avoid discovery of her thefts."
Throughout the trial, she was described as a 'menace to friends and strangers alike', after it emerged that she had repeatedly deceived those closest to her.
The judge ultimately declared her a 'dangerous woman', and imposed an indeterminate sentence.
This meant that no fixed release date was set in order to protect the public, though she would become eligible for parole after serving a minimum of five years in custody.
The Poisoning: How to Kill Your Husband, will air on tonight (July 7) on Channel 5.
