A couple in their seventies have purchased a brand-new electric Volvo - and used their beloved 61-year-old classic from the same brand to sweeten the deal.

It is believed to be one of the biggest age gaps between the vehicle being traded in  and the one being bought.

Bohdan, 73, and Marian Antoniw, 72, have swapped their 1965 Volvo Amazon 122S - which they have owned since December 1980 - for a state-of-the-art EC40 EV.

Showing the generational gulf between the two models, the Amazon was the first production car to have three-point seatbelts, while Volvo has this year released new models with the latest 'super seatbelt' restraint system, which measures the size and weight of passengers in milliseconds.

The couple's new 26-plate EC40 crossover cost £45,995.

That's almost 100 times the £475 the pair paid for the Amazon when they bought it from a showroom in Greenwich, south-east London, 46 years ago.

The Antoniws said the classic Volvo has been an 'integral' part of their family's life for almost half a century, even bringing their two children home from hospital after their births and making an appearance on their wedding day.

But they said now was the time to 'embrace electric' as the shift to battery-powered vehicles continues to gather pace.

Bohdan, 73, and Marian Antoniw, 72, have traded in their 1965 Volvo Amazon 122S after 46 years of ownership...

And the couple has replaced the vintage Volvo with an electric one: a £46,000 EC40 with a claimed battery range of 336 miles

The Amazon, which was produced between 1958 and 1970, is still in very good mechanical condition.

In fact, records show that the car passed its MOT in December, meaning it still has six months remaining on its current certificate.

This is despite the fact the car is more than 40 years old and therefore does not need an MOT to remain on the road.

The couple said they chose to part ways with their heirloom motor due to a desire to drive across Europe to Berlin.

This encouraged them to switch to something modern with creature comforts such as air conditioning, plush seats, satellite navigation and other gadgets motorists typically get in the latest cars.

Volvo confirmed it had purchased the Amazon 122S from the Antoniws as part of the trade-in for their sporty electric crossover.

However, the Swedish carmaker has refused to disclose what it gave the couple for their vintage vehicle.

According to classic-car valuation experts Hagerty UK, a 1965 Amazon 122S in excellent condition is worth around £12,300 today.

However, one in pristine, original condition could be valued at as much as £21,200. That is still less than half the price of the new EV.

The couple will use the electric Volvo couple to drive across Europe to Berlin

Bohdan Antoniw, from Ipswich, Suffolk, said: 'We will miss the Amazon because it has been part of our family for so long and is fun to drive.

'But it feels like the right time for a change and to embrace electric.'

Their decision comes as the UK new-car market recorded its biggest share of EV sales in a single month.

In June, three in ten new cars delivered to UK customers were battery-electric models.

The transition has been accelerated in recent months by higher fuel costs triggered by rising oil prices linked to conflict in the Middle East.

However, the wider availability of electric cars with longer ranges - many of them subject to substantial manufacturer-backed discounts and the Government's EV grants - has also sparked increased demand.

The EC40 has been available in showrooms since April 2024 and boasts a range of up to 336 miles on a full charge.

'If cars have a spirit, we like to think it [the Amazon 122S] would be happy knowing a new generation has taken its place,' Bohdan said.

'We have enjoyed many family holidays across England, the west coast of Ireland and Wales.

'We took the children there as youngsters every year for the summer solstice at Avebury Stone Circle - a very special place for us.

'We also have a number of favourite camping haunts.'

There are fewer than 200 Volvo Amazon 122S surviving in Britain. Volvo Cars UK will be restoring the Antoniws' cherished car before adding it to the brand's heritage fleet

DVLA records from the end of 2025 suggest there are just 119 Amazon 122S cars still on the road in the UK. A further 70 are believed to be on SORN.

And the Antoniws' cherished car will be put to good use.

Volvo Car UK has confirmed it is being added to its heritage fleet of classic cars, though not before it undergoes a 'sympathetic restoration' to preserve its originality.

Nicole Melillo Shaw, managing director of Volvo Car UK, said: 'Affection for Volvo is deep-rooted among families up and down the UK, so we have been delighted to hear the wonderful stories from the Antoniw family about their beloved car.

'I am so proud to hear that the qualities they love about Volvo remain the same and that moving to the EC40 feels like a natural next step for them.

'We were also very touched that they have trusted us to restore their Amazon, and it will be a pleasure to welcome it into our UK heritage fleet.'
