Chef Dom Taylor has tragically died. The award-winning cook, best known for winning Channel 4's Five Star Kitchen: Britain’s Next Great Chef, was inundated with tributes from heartbroken fans and colleagues. While the cause of death remains unknown, Dom's death was confirmed by his team at his East London restaurant, The Good Front Room (TGFR). The statement read: "We are deeply saddened to share the news of the sudden passing of our founder, Chef Dom Taylor.
"Dom was a visionary whose bold, joyful approach to celebrating the Caribbean cuisine of his childhood brought a fresh and exciting voice to London’s restaurant scene. His passion, talent and generosity touched so many people, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and experiencing his food." They continued: "He will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone whose lives he touched during this incredibly difficult time. We kindly ask that everyone respects the privacy of Dom’s loved ones at this time.
"The Good Front Room will remain open as we honour Dom’s legacy and continue the work he was so passionate about. We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult period."
As a grandchild of the Windrush generation, Dom was passionate about Caribbean flavours and started his own private catering business before starring on the Channel 4 contest.
Winning the cutthroat competition led to the creation of TGFR, which began as a dining concept at the Langham Hotel. There, he worked closely with the show's host, Michel Roux Jr, to reimagine popular dishes such as jerk chicken and ackee and saltfish.
The pop-up was originally scheduled to last six months, but ran for 10 due to its popularity. Dom opened The Good Front Room in Dalston earlier this year.
At the time of its opening, Dom shared: "The Good Front Room is inspired by my great-aunt Myrtle and the sacred front rooms found in so many Caribbean homes, spaces kept for special guests and layered with pride and memory. As a grandchild of the Windrush generation, I feel a responsibility to carry the torch and keep our stories, recipes, and traditions alive."
Tributes poured in across social media, as one fan penned: "This news about Chef Dom Taylor is really sad. May he rest in perfect peace."
Food writer Melissa Thompson wrote: "Sending love and strength to the team. Dom was a very special person."
BBC Radio 1Xtra host commented: "Still can’t believe it. Rest in Peace, Dom, a one of one."
A third added: "Dom was a friend of my friends. They are heartbroken. A thoroughly decent, talented, kind guy. RIP Dom."
As another shocked fan remarked: "That Chef Dom Taylor news f***ing FLOORED ME."
"Very sad to hear the lovely Chef Dom Taylor has passed on. We went to eat at his restaurant in Dalston, The Good Front Room and I've been reminiscing about that lovely sea bass till this day. What a talent we have lost. Gone way too soon. May he rest in paradise," added a fifth.
