A horror film that left cinema-goers "gagging" in their seats has now landed on streaming platforms for home viewing. For those daring enough to watch, Lee Cronin's The Mummy has arrived on HBO Max just months after its theatrical release, though those who have already seen it have cautioned that it may not be appropriate for "sensitive" viewers.
The film follows TV journalist Charlie Cannon (Jack Reynor), his wife Larissa (Laia Costa) and their children as they attempt to build a life in Egypt. Tragedy strikes when their daughter Katie vanishes from the family home, tearing the household apart. Eight years on, Charlie and Larissa have left the country behind, only to receive a shocking phone call revealing that their daughter has been discovered mummified — yet somehow still alive — inside an ancient sarcophagus.
Their relief proves short-lived once they bring her home and realise something is deeply wrong with her, reports The Mirror.
The picture was directed by Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin, whose previous credits include Evil Dead Rise and the forthcoming Evil Dead Burn. Prior to its release, Cronin teased: "It's an insane mashup to suggest, but [The Mummy is] almost one part Poltergeist and one part Se7en."
While critics gave the film a modest Rotten Tomatoes score of 46 per cent, audiences proved far more enthusiastic. At the time of writing, it holds an audience rating of 72 per cent.
"Best horror movie since The Exorcist. Kept us on the edge of our seats," gushed one fan of the film. A second added: "It's probably the most scariest movie I've have ever seen."
Meanwhile a third horror fan remarked: "As scary as The Exorcist! Very Gore! Super, super scary." Another penned: "If you liked Evil Dead Rise you'll like this one too."
They continued: "This movie was so freaking DISGUSTING and nasty. So good though. From skin peeling, nasty toes, and bodily fluid it had me literally gagging. Be warned if sensitive because this was just grooossss. Ugh. Bravo."
"We really liked it! Very intense. Way better than some that were rated better like Smile 2! That one was bad!" yet another fan declared.
With the film landing on HBO Max today (July 3), prospective viewers can decide for themselves whether their nerves are steely enough to sit through it.
