England’s unlikely mascots have predicted another win for the Three Lions in their semi-final against Argentina tonight.

The group of ‘Mystic Meerkats’ at Drusillas Park in Sussex have had a flawless track record so far and they are yet to make an incorrect prediction for England’s World Cup matches.

To make their prediction, two buckets filled with sweetcorn and peas are placed in their enclosure, with flags of the two opposing teams on them. The bucket that attracts the most attention from the meerkats indicates the winning side.

The 2026 World Cup isn’t the first time the mystic meerkats have tried their hand at divination. During the 2024 Euros, they accurately predicted the outcome of every match, up until the final.

A group of mystic meerkats have predicted England will go through to the World Cup final

Jacinta Dawe, Zoo Section Leader at Drusillas Park, said: ‘Today’s forecast was actually one of our most convincing predictions. Apart from a few early peeks, the Argentina bucket was almost completely ignored while the England bucket attracted nearly all of the mob. It couldn’t have been much clearer.

‘They’ve definitely caught football fever.’

But don’t place your bets yet. The mystic meerkats are not the only animal oracles to take on the challenge of predicting the World Cup results.

Since Paul the Octopus achieved global fame during the 2010 World Cup by correctly forecasting the outcome of every Germany match in the tournament, plenty of animals have become internet celebrities for their prophecies, amassing thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok.

Viral sensation Moo Deng, who has just passed his first birthday, was presented with two watermelon halves, each bearing a flag. The pygmy hippo chose Argentina to win, but don’t worry, he doesn’t have the best track record, having backed France over Spain in the semi-final.

Adorable baby chimp, Jane, who lives at Wingham Wildlife Park, has correctly predicted five out of 6 England matches so far, with her only slip-up being the draw between England and Ghana.

England are aiming to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 when they face Argentina

The Western Chimpanzee, who is being rehabilitated by zookeepers after being rejected by her mother, decided that England were the ones to back tonight by kissing a football with a painted England flag on the front.

Over in Canada, ‘Swimbappe’ the goldfish has made a splash in Toronto with his predictions. Despite a patchier record - he’s been correct about half the time - Swimbappe has received a lot of attention.

He’s been given a special fish tank that is decked out with a mini football pitch which faces the street so that passers-by can stop and say hello, alongside a massive poster advertising his talents. Swimbappe is yet to make his prediction for England’s matchup against Argentina.

Tonight’s semi-final in Atlanta will reveal whether the mystic meerkats can continue their unblemished record and see England defeat Argentina to reach its first World Cup final since 1966.
