Perfect viewing for fans of Mr Selfridge and Downton Abbey, this sumptuous period drama offers two series about the life of an ambitious entrepreneur.

With costume dramas commanding both big screens and living room viewing, audiences are lauding this 2012 series as they discover it on streaming services.

The Paradise is a British historical drama based on an 1883 French novel, Au Bonheur des Dames, reworked to unfold in the North East of England. It takes inspiration from the real-life story of Aristide Boucicaut, who established the renowned French department store in Paris, moving the story to an English backdrop.

The opening series starts in 1875 and follows the diverse lives of those employed at the store, its customers and business associates. As the establishment flourishes on the high street, a fresh arrival joins the team, rapidly causing upheaval and sparking competition among the workforce.

Regrettably for loyal followers, the programme was axed and fans continue to demand more episodes. The second series of The Paradise broadcast in 2014, before the BBC announced there would be no third, reports the Liverpool Echo.

One fan posted on Rotten Tomatoes: "Perfect, although I wish there were more seasons! I love this show so very much! ! Wonderful actors, storylines and a show I will watch again. I did miss the original Pauline, but it all worked in time."

Another added: "BBC's period drama, The Paradise, has all the right moves. It's sexuality is subtle and charming. Its characters are magnetic and distinct. Its scenes pop with colour and vibrance."

The ensemble is led by Joanna Vanderham as Denise Lovett, Peter Wright as Edmund Lovett and Emun Elliott as John Moray. The cast has garnered considerable acclaim for their portrayals, breathing life into this enthralling narrative.

One review says: "Wonderful Series, it transports the viewer into a new world of the Victorian Era with charm and Beauty. The story and characters are not only captivating but also have a lot of heart. The Paradise advertises working in retail with such creativity unlike any other."

Principal photography was at Lambton Castle, which was converted into an 1870s department store, alongside a purpose-built Victorian-style street crafted to replicate a period high street.

An additional setting is Biddick Hall, also on the Lambton estate, which functioned as Lord Glendenning's home.

Upon finishing the series, one viewer said: "Excellent acting, interesting story line, characters that will never be forgotten, and women valued for their intelligence and skills. Could have used more depth, but I still thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this period piece."

The Paradise is available to stream on Amazon Prime, or alternatively at no charge on U, with hire options available across other streaming services.
