Actor Sam Neill has died aged 78, with his family announcing the heartbreaking news in an emotional statement. The Jurassic Park and Peaky Blinders star died on Monday in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his loved ones. Confirming his death on social media, his family said: "It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia.

"Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free."

They also thanked staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their care and asked for privacy as they come to terms with their loss, adding that further details would be shared in due course.

Neill revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. Although he later said the disease was in remission, he continued to receive monthly chemotherapy.

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Northern Ireland in 1947, he and his famlly moved to New Zealand when he was just a child. Apparently, in his school there were a lot of Nigels at school, so he became known as Sam and later adopted it as his stage name. before beginning an acting career that would span more than five decades.

He said: "I encouraged the nickname because I thought I'd be slightly less likely to be victimized during the tender years. Nigel was a little effete for the rigours of a New Zealand playground."

After making his breakthrough in 1977's Sleeping Dogs, Neill went on to become one of cinema's best-loved actors, starring in films including Jurassic Park, The Hunt for Red October, The Piano and The Horse Whisperer.

In more recent years, he won a new generation of fans for his role as police chief Chester Campbell in BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders, alongside Cillian Murphy.

In 2023, Neill published his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, in which he candidly reflected on both his remarkable acting career and his battle with cancer.
