Sky News issues Pope 'breaking news' as Vatican gives four-word statement after 'crisis'

Sky News was interrupted on Monday morning to issue a breaking news update on Pope Francis from the Vatican. Host Leah Boleto said live on air: "The Vatican says the Pope 'slept well all night' after an isolated breathing crisis which happened on Friday. The 88-year-old has been in the hospital for two weeks and remains in a stable but complex condition.

"Doctors say he is not suffering from a fever but repeated that he is not out of danger." Doctors also said that the Pope is off mechanical ventilation and shows no sign of new infection. Francis had been using a non-invasive ventilation mask to pump oxygen into his lungs following Friday's coughing episode, but spent all day Sunday without it.

Friday's setback had sparked fears that the Pope had developed a new lung infection, but doctors said it could take 48 hours to determine if any infection had taken hold.

On Sunday, doctors said that there was no fever or signs of infection, which indicates that he had overcome the crisis.

The Pope was admitted to hospital on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days. He was first treated for bronchitis before being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.
