UK suffers biggest-EVER fall in billionaires after Rachel Reeves' tax crackdown, rich list reveals as Hindujas are named as Britain's most wealthy again
Proper news from Britain - News from Britain you won’t find anywhere else. Not the tosh the big media force-feed you every day!
The UK has suffered the biggest fall in billionaires on record after Chancellor Rachel Reeves' recent tax raid on nom-doms and British businesses, it was revealed today.
Once again, Gopi Hinduja and his family, who are behind the Indian conglomerate Hinduja Group, were named Britain's richest family by The Sunday Times Rich List, despite their wealth dipping to £35.3 billion from £37.2 billion.
The number of billionaires dropped to 156 this year from 165 in 2024, representing the sharpest decline in the Sunday Times Rich List's 37-year-history.
The biggest loser on the list is Jim Ratcliffe. The Ineos founder, who is struggling to turn around Manchester United since becoming part-owner, has seen his fortune decline by around £6.4billion for the second consecutive year. But he is still seventh on the overall list with a wealth of around £17billion.
Ukrainian-born British-American business magnate Sir Leonard Blavatnik's fortune has dropped by £3.5billion to £25.73 billion. Moscow-born mathematician turned trader Alex Gerko has lost £3.31billion but his business XTX Markets has still left him sitting on £8.754billion.
Sir Dennis and Lady Gillings have lost £2.6billion in the pharma industry and Andy Currie, director of chemical company Ineos, has lost £1.9billion but is still worth £5.33billion.
The Labour Government abolished the non-dom tax status in April, which is where UK residents whose permanent home or domicile for tax purposes is outside the UK.
The Autumn Budget last year included several other controversial tax changes. Since last month employers have had to start paying higher National Insurance contributions for their staff. Rachel Reeves, backed by Sir Keir Starmer, also made changes to capital gains tax and inheritance tax.
'Our billionaire count is down and the combined wealth of those who feature in our research is falling,' Robert Watts, compiler of the Rich List, said today.
'We are also finding fewer of the world's super rich are coming to live in the UK.'
He said he was also 'struck by the strength of criticism for Rachel Reeves's Treasury' when speaking to wealthy individuals for the publication.
Mr Watts said: 'We expected the abolition of non-dom status would anger affluent people from overseas.
'But homegrown young tech entrepreneurs and those running centuries-old family firms are also warning of serious consequences to a range of tax changes unveiled in last October's budget.'

But a Canvey Island cab firm owner now known as the 'king' of Britain's migrant hotels has become a billionaire after his profits jumped by 60 per cent from housing asylum seekers who arrive in the UK.
Graham King, 57, is now estimated to be worth a staggering £1.015billion - up from £750million in just a year - thanks to his asylum empire providing accommodation, food and transport for migrants.
His firm Clearsprings Ready Homes rakes in £4.8million of taxpayers' cash every day. The business is paid by the Home Office to provide short-term accommodation in hotels for asylum seekers and has an incredible £1.7billion annual turnover.
He is now among The Sunday Times Rich List's newest billionaires - thanks to a £265million increase in his personal fortune in just 12 months.
The former caravan park and disco owner, who grew up in Canvey Island, Essex, has been arguably the biggest beneficiary of Britain's migration boom, fuelled in part by the small boats crisis.
A record 108,138 refugees claimed asylum in the UK last year - up from 91,811 in 2023. This year the number of migrants who have crossed the English Channel in small boats is already through the 10,000 barrier - an increase of about 40 per cent.
Graham King's explosion in wealth - and elevation to billionaire status - comes despite the UK suffering the biggest fall in billionaires on record after Chancellor Rachel Reeves ' recent non-dom tax crackdown.
Another King to benefit is Charles himself. His personal wealth has gone up by £30million to £640million in the past year - making him twice as rich as his late mother Queen Elizabeth II.
Other famous figures including Sir Elton John, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Sir Lewis Hamilton and David and Victoria Beckham all appear in the annual list of the UK's 350 richest individuals and families.

Last year, former Conservative chancellor Jeremy Hunt revealed plans to scrap the tax status before successor Rachel Reeves sped up the process.
Akshata Murty, the wife of former prime minister Rishi Sunak, is among those who were well-known non-doms.
The couple once again appear in the Rich List, although their wealth slipped to £640 million from £651 million a year earlier, after her shares in Infosys - the tech company founded by her father - fell over tariff concerns.
Other notable figures on the list included the King, whose wealth matched that of Mr Sunak and Ms Murty at £640 million.
The Hindujas were followed in the list by real estate moguls David and Simon Reuben, who moved up to second after increasing their wealth to £26.9 billion.
They were followed by investor Sir Leonard Blavatnik, entrepreneur Sir James Dyson and shipping tycoon Idan Ofer.

Meanwhile, the biggest risers were the Russian-born brothers Igor and Dmitry Bukhman who built a fortune on mobile games such as Gardenscapes and Fishdom, who saw their wealth almost double to £12.5 billion.
The King's personal wealth has gone up by £30million to £640million in the past year - making him twice as rich as his late mother Queen Elizabeth II.
The monarch, 76, who acceded to the throne in 2022, ranks joint 238th in the list of the UK's 350 wealthiest people and families, up 20 places from 258th in 2024, according to The Sunday Times Rich List.
The monarch is £140million richer than David and Victoria Beckham, who are said to be worth £500 million, with former England captain Beckham being Britain's richest sports star.
The late Queen's wealth was said to be £370 million in 2022, with Charles now estimated to be worth £270 million more than his mother, rising from £610 million to £640million in 2025.
The current sovereign Charles III was the longest serving Prince of Wales in history, between 1958 and 2022. As the Prince of Wales, Charles received a private income of up to £23million a year from the Duchy of Cornwall estate, now inherited by Prince William.
The jump in his wealth brings Charles' fortune neck-and-neck with former prime minister Rishi Sunak and wife Akshata Murty - and £140million clear of the Beckhams.
The 76-year-old monarch, who has faced a challenging past year as he continues to undergo treatment for cancer, has benefited from the investment portfolio he inherited from his late mother for the bulk of his wealth, the newspaper said.
His private estates Sandringham in Norfolk and Balmoral in Aberdeenshire, which belonged to the Queen, are part of his financial fortune.

Only personal assets are included by The Sunday Times when assessing the sovereign's wealth.
This does not include the Crown Estate, which saw soaring profits thanks to wind farm deals, the Duchy of Lancaster estate, nor the Crown Jewels which are held in trust by the King for the nation.
The personal wealth of Mr Sunak and Ms Murty dropped £11 million from £651 million to £640 million.
Since leaving Downing Street, the former prime minister has taken a part-time role at Stanford University and signed up to the Washington Speakers Bureau, and the couple launched a charity to tackle numeracy problems in the UK.
Ms Murty has a stake in Infosys, the Indian IT giant co-founded by her billionaire father.
Charles used his Duchy of Cornwall money for non-official expenditure for himself and his family and for the official cost of personal staff, his office and official residences.
