A man has died and a nine-year-old girl is injured after a horror shooting at a shopping centre in Ireland.

Police descended on the Fairgreen Shopping Centre, in Carlow town, at around 6.15pm today following reports of gunshots as shoppers fled in panic.

A 'white Irish male' is confirmed to be dead at the scene and it is believed that his wounds were self-inflicted.

His body will not be removed from the premises until the area has been declared safe.

Police say the girl was treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene and she did not require hospitalisation.

They added they are still determining the cause of her injuries.

Local reports by RTE suggest the man' fired a number of shots' inside the Tesco supermarket within the centre before he died.

A bomb squad, Gardai, ambulance and fire service remain on the scene with the premises fully evacuated.
