Ukraine LIVE: Macron to consider use of nuclear weapons as he states Russia is 'a threat'

French President Emmanuel Macron is contemplating using France’s nuclear deterrent to protect Europe against Russian threats. In a televised address, he described Russia as a "threat to France and Europe" and announced plans to consult with European allies on the matter.
"I have decided to open the strategic debate on the protection of our allies on the European continent by our [nuclear] deterrent," he said.
As the EU’s only nuclear power, France holds a pivotal role in European defence.
The issue will be discussed at an emergency summit in Brussels, where leaders will also address military support for Ukraine.
Macron stressed the importance of transatlantic ties but warned Europe must be prepared to act independently amid shifting US policies, particularly following comments from former President Donald Trump.
Macron’s address came as the US halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz confirmed the pause, stating that aid could resume once Trump is assured of Ukraine’s commitment to peace.
