In the Spring Cup (Newbury 3.12), METAL MERCHANT (NAP) can repeat last year’s victory despite running off a 6lb higher mark. That form was boosted when Godwinson, who was half a length behind in second, won the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster on his reappearance this season and was subsequently put up 11lb to 99. In contrast the selection, who has a good record when running fresh, runs off a mark of 97.
Earlier, RUBY ISLAND (NB) looks the one to beat in the Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (Ayr 2.55). She finished 15 lengths ahead of the reopposing Lavida Adiva at the track a month ago and runs off 5lb better terms. This step up in trip to three miles could bring about further improvement in her.

3.12 NEWBURY: McHENRY (NAP) has won first time out in each of the last two seasons, so he clearly goes well fresh. He enjoyed an excellent 2024 campaign, culminating in a second-place finish in the Cambridgeshire Handicap.
3.35 AYR: SNIPE and SAIL AWAY tick plenty of boxes based on historical trends. A win for either would give Dan Skelton a boost in his quest to fend off Willie Mullins in the race to be Champion Trainer.
4.54 NEWBURY: METALLO is fit from the all-weather and drops down in class for this return to turf. Rossa Ryan gets back on board and the pair can defy top weight.
